Apodemus Kaup, 1829 - (field mice)
This genus occurs in Europe and Asia and contains around 20 species of small to medium sized mice, with a typical body length of around 10 cm plus a tail of similar length. They live mainly in or near forests, construct deep burrows and eat mostly roots, seeds and berries. Field crops may also serve as food. Several species may become abundant and can then cause damage to forest trees or crops. Some may also be reservoirs of human disease agents. They are rarely a problem in houses.
